2025 Citizens of the Year

Former Martinez City Councilmember Barbara Woodburn is remembered as a fierce environmental advocate whose tireless work preserved open space and protected critical habitats in her community. Her environmental legacy is defined by a tenacious, grassroots approach that challenged powerful interests and led to the creation of both the Friends of the Franklin Hills and the Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline. A testament to her impact, a local natural area, Barbara Woodburn Canyon, was named in her honor.

Helen Rossi retired from a three-decade career with the Martinez Unified School District (MUSD) at the end of the 2024-25 school year. Having worked her way up from an 8th-grade math teacher in 1994, her legacy is defined by resilience and unwavering dedication to students.
